1. Products concerned

This document applies to the PC Card :
- MC220 (COM One Platinium Card, 4 in 1) only (not MC223 nor MC226…).

OEM note : Most of the information's of this document are true for our OEM products too.

2. Things to check

2.1 Computer start

- When computer start, the LAN adapter *must* be plugged to the PC Card.

- If you also own the ISDN adapter and wish to use it on same session : start with LAN adapter. When operating system is fully loaded, you can remove LAN adapter then plug ISDN. After ISDN session, replug LAN adapter to access the network.

2.2 Does PSTN work ?

Does PSTN work ?. You must be sure it work (ex: Internet or Hyperterminal connection). This is a way to be sure the card is installed and recognized.

2.3 Checking installation

1. Open button Start / Programs / COMOne Platinium Card, do you see a line " LAN Manual" ?
- If yes, this mean MC220 LAN files are installed (sx456eth.sys ...).
- If no, you must uninstall "COMOne Platinium Card" restart the computer, run the MC220 CD-Rom SETUP.EXE, and select "LAN".

2. If you know how to use Hyperterminal or any Terminal software, type the command "at*i".
- If you see the word "LAN" or "QUAT" this mean LAN (or LAN + GSM) is activated correctly into the firmware's card.
- Else open button “Start / Programs / COMOne Platinium Card / Platinium Card Loader", then select the line with "LAN" word. Note: if you don't own a GSM phone just select any one then click Next.

3. Modem driver :
My computer / Control Panel / modems, do you see the "COM One Platinium Card …" driver ?.
If no (ie. if you see a "Standard PCMCIA Card Modem") delete it, unplug the card, then restart Windows.

4. Devices manager :
My computer / Control Panel / System / Devices manager, do you see any sign of conflict ?.

Windows NT 4 : is a card manager installed ?

Examples :
- SystemSoft Card Wizard.
- Softex Phoenix Card Executive v2.x.
- Award CardWare.

MC220 ISDN/LAN adapters can not work under Windows NT 4 if some card manager is installed, because MC220 ISDN/LAN technology requieres a direct access to PCMCIA controller.

You must uninstall this software in order to install and run the ISDN/LAN functions.
We know this is not a easy solution, we're working to try to find a better one.

Note: PSTN and GSM modes work without any changes.

2.5 Network protocols

NetBEUI

- If NetBEUI protocol is installed, do you see other computers on the network ?

TCP/IP

- Can you PING your own computer ? (“ping localhost”)
- Can you PING another computer ?
Note: You must set an IP address to the network card before to be able to ping other computers.

Do you see the MAC Address ?

- Note: See in next chapter how to see MAC Address.

2.6 Specific to driver TECH0359 and previous

TECH0359 (and TECH0330, TECH0265) installation process under W9x :
1. TECH0359 copy drivers files (ISDN, LAN, Firmwares, Doc ...) to hard disk (Windows directory).
2. TECH0359 run Loader and enable MC220 card for LAN.
3. A new MC220 is detected by Windows.
4. Windows search and install for new drivers files on it’s hard drive.
5. Windows install network files from it’s own CD-Rom.

Anomaly known
Problem : A problem may occurs if you insert a MC220 card already LAN enabled into a clean computer, because step 4 will fail. Our HTML documention recommends to load MC220 without LAN function before uninstalling.
Solution : install TECH0359 (all functions), restart Windows, uninstall TECH, restart Windows, install TECH0359 all functions, restart Windows, insert the MC220 card.

Note : from TECH0473 driver and nexts, Windows is able to get drivers files directly inside the CD-Rom cabs files. This problem does not occur.

3. Miscellaneous

Frequent questions and answers

Q : What are the green and the red leds ?
Green led show if LAN driver is activated.
Red led show network traffic (collisions).

Q : Under Windows 95/98 with WINIPCFG.EXE, I see that the "SX456 Ethernet Companion" has no MAC address (00-00-00-00-00-00).
A : Upgrade to the latest driver.

Q : Under Windows NT 4, I see that the MAC address is empty (00-00-00-00-00-00).
A : Did you booted the computer with the LAN adapter plugged?, if not do it, else upgrade to the latest driver.

Q : Under Windows NT 4 at the end of SETUP installation I get this error message: "The PC card modem is not installed or is not plugged. Please install it, and plug the PC card before running again the setup program".
A : You must install the PC Card in analog mode, with the driver (INF file) provided and no any other (ex: "Standard modem..."). Note that you should use the latest INF file (from disk 1 of the adapter box).
Check the modem driver used : open Control panel / then Modems.

Getting version number from LAN driver file

This chapter is only present for history. We recommend systematic update to driver version TECH0359 minimum.

Windows NT 4 : Display properties of the file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ SX456ETH.SYS
Windows 95/98 : Display properties of the file
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ SX456ETH.SYS

Warning ! get product version number, not the simple version number on bottom of the window :

Details about MAC Address (Physical Address)

Each time Windows start, the LAN driver will get the hardware MAC (Media Access Control) address from the LAN adapter.

The MAC address ("hardware" address) is unique in the world (each MAC address is built with 2 fields one for the manufacturer and a second for the product serial number). Each LAN adapter own a different MAC address.

Note: it is not possible to change the MAC address of MC220 LAN kit (hardware address).

How to get MAC address

Win 95 / 98 / ME : To view informations about network cards :
Button Start / select Run / type "
winipcfg <ENTER>" Picture.

Win NT 4 and 2000 : IPCONFIG.EXE can be used to view the informations about all network cards (Button Start / DOS Command Prompt / type "ipconfig <ENTER>Picture).

We recommend to type "ipconfig /all |more <ENTER>" to display MAC address (Into section "Ethernet Adapter sx456eth", MAC address is the "Physical Address" Picture ).

4. Informations to supply to COM One support

Does ISDN adapter work ?

If the user own LAN and ISDN adapter, does ISDN work? This information can be usefull for our developpers.
