This document applies to 3 kind of PC Cards :
- MC218 (COM One Communication Card, 3 in 1).
- MC220 (COM One Platinium Card, 4 in 1).
- GSM Only (COM One GSM/PCN/DCS Mobile Data PC Card).

OEM : Most of the information's of this document are true for OEM products too.

General

Loader trouble shooting

Q: Loader error message : File missing "NameRegistryLib".

A: 1. If your Mac is in the list of supported Mac by the Loader, this mean that the MAC OS system PCMCIA library was not installed.
Add it by running again the Mac OS personalized installation and select this function.

2. Else this mean the Loader is not compatible with your Mac.

MAC OS v8

Message d'erreur : "Le logiciel nécessaire pour utiliser la carte PC 'Connecteur INFERIEUR PCMCIA' n'est pas installé." "Souhaitez-vous éjecter cette dernière?"

Deux choix sont alors possibles :
<Ejecter> : la carte s'éjecte.
<Annuler> : la fenêtre disparaît et l'icône de la carte apparaît sur le bureau.

Explication : lors d'une installation de Mac OS 8, la gestion des cartes PCMCIA n'est pas sélectionnée d'origine, si elle n'a pas été rajoutée manuellement il est normal qu'elle ne soit pas présente.

Solution : Avec MAC OS 8, voici comment ajouter la gestion des cartes PCMCIA :

Insérer le CD-Rom Mac OS.
Lancer "Installation Mac OS"
"Ajouter/Supprimer"
Cocher "Mac OS 8"
Choisir "Installation Personnalisée"
Ouvrir la rubrique "Mobilité", sélectionner "Extensions pour carte PCMCIA".
Cliquer sur le bouton "Installer".

MC218 Mac Disk Utilities for GSM upgrade (March 1998)

You can now download the Macintosh Disk Utilities V2.0.1 from our Web site.

The INSTALL.HQX file contain Loaders, firmwares and modem scripts. Don't forget to read the README.HQX file for installations notes.

To upgrade a MC218 card for GSM, choose the right firmware file:
- WW Only PSTN mode
- ALC ALCATEL HC1000
- MOT MOTOROLA D460/8400/8700/SlimLite/StarTAC
- NOK NOKIA 3110/8110/8110i
- NK2 NOKIA 2110/6080/6080i
- PAN PANASONIC G350/G400/G500
- SIE SIEMENS S4/SONY CMD-X1000
- SON SONY CMD Z1

Loader to use

Loader 1400: PowerBook 150, 1400, 5300.
Loader 3400: PowerBook 2400, 3400, G3, G3 series.

Loader's seems to not work with: PB 520 (OS 7.6.1 or 8.1).

Recommended program to decode HQX and SIT files: STUFFIT Expander v4, it can be downloaded from http://www.aladdinsys.com

Note : STUFFIT Expander is included into Mac OS v8.

MC220 Platinium Card

Kits ISDN, LAN

Q: Can I use on Macintosh the ISDN or LAN kit with the MC220 4 in 1 ?

A: Only the PSTN and GSM kits are available for the Macintosh. ISDN and LAN don't work on Macintosh, no drivers planed.

MC220 and FaxSTF

FaxSTF v3.2.3
GSM fax mode send/receive work.
PSTN fax sending work.

It seems the MC220 can't receive PSTN faxes with v3.2.3 (firmware used for the test: COM1NK6.L01), symptom : breaks after handshake.

Modem driver to select: "Class 1 for 9600 send/receive PC Cards modems"

FaxSTF v5.0.0 Pro

PSTN fax mode send/receive is working.
GSM fax sending is working.

It seems MC220 GSM can't receive faxes with with Sony CMD X1000 and Siemens S4.

We're working on this problem.

About FaxSTF v5.x.x

The latest "Modems profile update" can be downloaded from editor web site. Contain the "COM One Platinum Card MC220" driver since Nov 1998.

Modem driver to select : "Class 1 for 9600 send/receive PC Card modems".

Currently (09/1998) Apple PowerBook G3 are shipped with Mac OS 8.1 and FaxSTF v5.0 light.

To check if FaxSTF 5 fax reception is activated: run FaxBrowser, then menu FaxMenu / Launch FaxStatus. The window FaxStatus display : "idle" ("data" if fax reception not activated).

Problems known

Q: The Loader don't work. I own a PowerBook 1400 or 5300.

A: The Loader provided only works with Power Book 2400, 3400, G3, G3 series. No MC220 Loader planed for other PowerBooks (1400, 5300 ...).

Note that the PC Card only need to be flashed only one time (you could do it onto a PC).

Q: When I select phones Siemens S4 or Siemens S10, the Loader can't find the file (example of error message: File "=COM1VS10.L17" not found).

A: For "SIEMENS S4" select "SONY CM-DX1000", and for "SIEMENS S10" select "SONY CMD-X2000".

Q: I own a PowerBook G3 and the PC Card Loader can't flash my card.

A: With a PB G3 you *must* unplug the cellular cable from the PC Card before flashing it to avoid an error message.

Q: During installation the system does not recognize the disk 2 and ask again "insert disk 2" (disk 2 is TECH0240).

A: - Workaround #1: By default 1500 Kb of memory is allowed to the installation software, this might not enough onto some Macintosh. Use the function "file information" (Apple + i) then set the memory wished to 3000 Kb. Restart the installation.

- Workaround #2: cancel the installation. Copy all the 3 disks into one folder of the hard disk, then run the installer from this folder.

Note: this problem is fixed from master TECH0306,307,308 (22/01/99).

Q: After selecting the MC220 then clicking <Next> the window is empty and when I click on Next nothing happens.

A: You will have to download a patch file or to install the next GSM upgrade disks. Fixed from TECH0330.

Q: My Mac doesn't own a CD-Rom drive.
A: Go into the folder "Disk Manager", read the instructions to create 4 disks from the 4 folders.

BinHex (*.HQX) files definition

An encoding scheme that converts binary data into ASCII characters. Any file, whether it be a graphics file, a text file, or a binary executable file, can be converted to BinHex. This format is particularly valuable for transferring files from one platform to another because nearly all computers can handle ASCII files. In fact, many e-mail programs include a BinHex encoder and decoder for sending and receiving attachments. BinHex is an especially common format for Macintosh files. Encoded files usually have a .HQX extension.

Macintosh / PC recommended program to decode HQX and SIT files: STUFFIT Expander (can be downloaded from http://www.aladdinsys.com/)

For PC users: SIT files can be compared to ZIP files.

Modem script file

1. The modem script may be required by some applications: Apple Remote Access (ARA) from Mac OS, and software to access internet.

3. To install a modem script file

Open the hard disk of your Macintosh, then open "System folder" then "Extensions" then "Modem script", copy the modem script file into this folder.

Software compatibility

You can use the modem PC Card with any softwares such as:

- Apple Telecom and Apple Fax v3.2.x from Mac OS CD-Rom (Apple Fax v3.1.x doesn't support fax class 1).
- Apple Open Transport (internet access).
- Free PPP, Mac TCP (internet access).
- FotoMac from RTE (data fax Minitel, http://www.fotomac.com).
- FaxSTF v5 from STF Software / SmithMicro (fax, http://www.smithmicro.com).
- Claris Works v3.x v4.x (data, http://www.claris.com).
- Videotex (Minitel): Timtel (http://www.goto.fr), Alistel (http://perso.wanadoo.fr/alis.software/).
- most of other communication software...

In this list, "data" means file transfert (Zmodem...) and/or Terminal.

Downloading Mac files from COM1 Web site

HQX are binary files (by default browsers saves all files as text files).

To save binary files use the "Save as" button, and not the standard "Save" button.

FreePPP and Open transport

Basic introduction

FreePPP, Mac TCP, Open Transport can be compared to the PC Win95 DialupNetworking function.

- FreePPP is a freeware PPP software not supported by any vendor but free.
- MacTCP is not used any more.
- OpenTransport is the official Apple PPP software built into the latest MacOS releases.

Where to find OpenTransport

Q: From what Mac OS release, is Open Transport available by default?

A: From Mac OS 7.5.3, but it is possible to not use it and keep an old PPP software.

Q: Is it possible to add Open Transport to old Mac OS versions?

A: Mac OS 7.5 can be updated to 7.5.1 then 7.5.3 for free with update files (and then Open Transport).
Mac OS 7.6 or 7.6.1 or 8.0 are free.
Mac OS 8.0 : with this release you can't use FreePPP any more.

FotoMac

Uninstalling FotoMac v2.60

Uninstalling and keeping logs and phone book

Don't touch the folder FotoMac.

In the extensions (Hard Disk / System Folder / Extensions), move to trash:
- FotoMac Fax [start]
- RTE (folder)

In the preferences (Hard Disk / System Folder / Preferences), move to trash:
- RTE (folder)

Restart the computer then empty trash. If you reinstall FotoMac in the same folder you will get your previous informations.

Full uninstallation

Put the folder FotoMac to trash, use the search function (File / Find) to find all files containing "RTE" in upper case only, then move them to trash.

Restart the computer, then empty trash.

Désinstaller FotoMac v2.60

Désinstallation de FotoMac en conservant les journaux et les annuaires

Ne pas toucher au dossier FotoMac.

Dans les extensions (Disque Dur / Dossier Système / Extensions), déplacez vers la corbeille:
- FotoMac Fax [démarrage]

Dans les préférences (Disque Dur / Dossier Système / Préférences), déplacez vers la corbeille:

Redémarrez la machine et videz la corbeille. Réinstallez FotoMac dans le dossier où il se trouvait précédemment.

Désinstallation totale de la version d'évaluation de FotoMac:

Mettez le logiciel FotoMac dans la corbeille, utilisez la fonction de recherche (Fichier / Rechercher), recherchez sur les disques locaux les éléments dont le nom contient "RTE" en majuscule exclusivement et déplacez tous ces éléments vers la corbeille.

Redémarrez la machine puis videz la corbeille.

Mini guide FotoMac 2.70 fourni par RTE

Voici le Mini-guide qui est à présent (1998) fourni par RTE sur une demi feuille A4 avec le package FotoMac v2.70:

Installez FotoMac et laissez-vous guider par l'assistant de configuration.

Si vous n'arrivez pas à envoyer des fax, recherchez le logiciel de communication qui bloque le port modem pour le désactiver (pour PowerBook 1400 et 3400, désactivez Fax Extension et Fax Sender). De même, si vous voulez utiliser un logiciel de connexion à Internet, pensez à désactiver le mode réception de FotoMac dans la fenêtre principale.

En cas de problème avec un PowerBook 5300 ou 190, munissez-vous du numéro de série de votre portable et contactez la hot-line d'Apple.

Dans l'onglet Lignes/modems, si le port indique [emprunté] au lieu de [attend], vérifiez que l'interface réseau AppleTalk ne soit pas configurée pour utiliser le même port série et qu'AppleTalk est activé par défaut sur ce port. Il faudra donc cocher l'icône "déconnecter".

Important: si vous avez un courrier de plusieurs pages à envoyer en télécopie, partez d'un traitement de texte, le module "message envoi fax" de FotoMac étant réservé à l'envoi d'une missive de quelques lignes (limité à une seule page).

FotoMac monoposte ne peut pas fonctionner en réseau avec les logiciels comme Sérial Way ou équivalents.

France specific informations

Alistel 1.6.1 (Emulateur Videotex)

1) Actuellement, AliStel propose une liste (fixe) de modems avec les chaînes d'initialisations correspondantes. Lesdites chaînes d'initialisation sont bien sûr modifiables (enregistrées dans le fichier "Préférences AliStel").

Pour entrer une chaîne d'initialisation pour un modem qui n'apparaît pas dans la liste :
- menu Préférences -> Communication -> bouton "Init" -> champ "Minitel standard (V23)"

Cette méthode à l'avantage de ne pas nécessiter de fichier externe à l'application (en dehors du fichier de prefs, transparent pour l'utilisateur), mais à ses limites. Je pense changer cela dans une prochaine version d'AliStel.
